If i'm not mistaken the high parts (oooeeooo) is a test tone generator played at different pitches, recorded and then the pieces cut together in the right order and covered with reverb. The dumdedum bit was a string over a box, plucked and then cut together again. It turns out there were no synths at the Radiophonic workshop at the time of making this so it was all real,

They did in the orginal leaked version of Rose, the first episode of the new series. But it was decided that the pace didn't fit the new series.

Paraphrasing Ben Jonson I'll say
"This was not of an age, but for all time!"

Ita all down to Delia really, composed by Ron, but apparently he was errr 'surprised' by what she made of his original score. Just so far ahead of its time, but then again, not really, since it was well loved at the time it was used

a lot of this was composed using tape reels, not synthesizers. the bass loop was actually sliced together using a lot of techniques used today

I really dont know what instrument it is but it is a realy good theme. And the steptoe and son main theme. The steptoe and son rides again piano theme was good.

there were a few very large synthisizers in labs at that time, they might have been using an ems synthi 100...
