Doohan said, about the time Star Trek V came out, that had they a bigger budget in the 60s, there would have been better effects. I think these enhancements were badly needed. In the old versions, you could easily lose track of where things were supposed to be.

It's awesome to cativate new viewers who complain about the effect.
All the cheeseness and nerdness are intact i loved

The Music is from the Motion Picture and is literally and fittingly "The Enterprise". Its from the majestic and slow sequence unveiling the refit Enterprise as Scotty takes Kirk on an inspection of the new ship, prior to docking.
Perfect choice of music indeed.

Really great. Then again, the artistic vision was already there, they just gave it a lick of paint.

I think the remastered version looks impressive; however, the purist in me will always make me side with the originals. It's all about nostalgia. I don't know if these remastered episodes are in line with Roddenberry's notes on how the effects should be.
So, in the end, I'll buy the originals on DVD and when I eventually get a Blu-Ray player, I'll buy the remasters in HD. Why buy both sets as SD. I better make room in my closet.

The nerd in me loves the update, the purist in me decries CGI effects that will look equally dated in 5 or 10 years anyways.
Having said that, I think 0:45 is a BIG improvement over the original shot. The original is exactly what it had to be at the time. A hand-painted model on a string over the only color representation we had of the earth in the 60's (essentially an old-school globe with pale colors). Frankly, the public at large didn't have hi-res color pictures of earth from space yet.

I think the new shots look great. As long as they are appropriate to the scene and don't try change the story, then I don't see the problem. A show this great deserves special effects that are worthy of it.
As for the purists: keep in mind that the original shows are untouchable: they will always be what they are and you don't have to like the remastered shows or even acknowledge them. But at least give it a chance. Who knows, you might like it. :) |
